Palatine Man Charged in Fatal I-80 Hit-and-Run During Tire Change

Prosecutors approved felony charges and the accused is being held in Cook County Jail pending his initial court appearance.

Overview

  • A 23-year-old man, Sebastian D. Stone of Carpentersville, was struck and killed while changing a tire on westbound I-80 near Torrence Avenue, in a crash that occurred just before 5:30 a.m. on June 24.
  • Illinois State Police say the striking vehicle left the scene and investigators identified 29-year-old Kuljeet Singh Kang as the driver.
  • Kang was arrested two days later on June 26 and the Cook County State's Attorney approved felony counts including reckless homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal injury.
  • Stone’s family said he had been heading to work when the tire trouble forced him to stop, and relatives have set up a GoFundMe to help the family cope with funeral and other expenses.
  • The case now moves into the criminal process with Kang held in Cook County Jail and the next key developments to watch are the defendant’s initial court appearance and formal prosecutorial steps toward trial.
