Palani, Usmani and van Vuuren Win ICC Associate Director Seats as Khwaja Is Ousted

Overview

• The Associate Member Directors election took place during the ICC Annual Conference in Edinburgh on Wednesday, with Gurumurthy Palani (France), Mubashir Usmani (UAE) and Dr. Rudie van Vuuren (Namibia) elected to two-year terms on the ICC Board.
• Palani topped the poll with 35 votes while Usmani and van Vuuren each received 26, and long-serving ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja finished fourth with 23 and did not secure re-election.
• Only 43 of 45 Associate Members were eligible to vote because USA Cricket and Cricket Canada remain suspended, leaving 129 possible votes under the rule of three votes per member.
• Palani’s move to the Board creates a vacancy on the Chief Executives’ Committee that must be filled by a separate election and the ICC must also appoint a new Deputy Chairman, with the Board expected to resolve these before the conference ends on July 11.
• Two of the elected directors join the ICC’s 17-member Board for the first time while Usmani retains his seat, a change that shifts Associate Member representation and ends Khwaja’s long run in senior ICC roles.
