Pakistan’s SPI Eases Week to Week, Still 4.18% Higher Year on Year

Despite the weekly dip, elevated essentials keep pressure on lower-income households.

  • PBS reported the Sensitive Price Indicator fell 0.48% to 333.60 in the week ended January 22, while the index stood 4.18% above the same week last year.
  • Sharp weekly declines were recorded in chicken (16.68%), potatoes (8.52%), onions (7.27%) and LPG (3.54%).
  • Notable weekly increases included tomatoes (9.83%), bananas (3.66%), wheat flour (2.27%) and eggs (1.02%).
  • Year on year, prices jumped for wheat flour (38.60%), eggs (35.99%) and gas charges for Q1 (29.85%), whereas potatoes, garlic and onions saw large annual drops.
  • All expenditure groups registered small weekly decreases; of 51 tracked items, 12 rose, 11 fell and 28 were unchanged across 17 urban centres.
