Overview
- Pakistan was elected by the UN General Assembly and will take its seat on January 1, 2026 for a three‑year term.
- Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and UN envoy Asim Iftikhar Ahmad thanked member states and pledged to uphold the Council’s mandate across civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to development.
- Pakistan said it will continue raising human rights concerns in territories it describes as under foreign occupation, including Jammu and Kashmir and the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
- The 2026–28 lineup also includes India, Angola, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Iraq, Italy, Mauritius, Slovenia, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Vietnam.
- This marks Pakistan’s sixth term on the 47‑member body, whose seats are filled by UNGA elections under regional distribution rules.
