Pakistan Retail Food Prices Defy Official Lists as Chicken and Produce Costs Rise

Weak enforcement has kept official price controls from lowering what shoppers pay.

Overview

  • A new city market survey reported that retailers kept charging well above government-notified rates despite fresh revisions to price lists.
  • Chicken led the gains as live birds rose by Rs15 per kilogram with official rates at Rs354–Rs368, and several markets reported short supply.
  • Chicken meat was officially set at Rs533 per kilogram yet commonly sold for Rs560–Rs640, while boneless cuts fetched Rs850–Rs950 in many localities.
  • Vegetable prices stayed high over official caps, with potatoes at Rs30–Rs40 per kilogram against Rs18–Rs20 on the list and tomatoes at Rs80–Rs120 against Rs32–Rs35, while onions sold for Rs80–Rs120 versus Rs60–Rs65.
  • Fruits also overshot notified levels, with dates showing one of the widest gaps at Rs800–Rs2,200 per kilogram against an official Rs350–Rs470, leaving households with little relief in a period of high inflation.
