Pakistan Presses UN on Kashmir Resolutions, Indus Treaty at IPU Hearing

Islamabad casts unresolved disputes as a test of international law.

Overview

  • At the UN IPU hearing in New York, Senate Chairman Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani led Pakistan’s delegation and called for inclusive UN reform under the banner “Reform for All, Privilege for None.”
  • He argued that climate stress, conflict and inequality are straining UN effectiveness and urged adequate, predictable financing to restore confidence in multilateral action.
  • In a meeting with UNGA President Annalena Baerbock, Gilani pressed for implementation of Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir, while Baerbock offered condolences over recent attacks in Pakistan and emphasized collective counterterrorism.
  • Gilani alleged that India has placed the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, describing it as a violation of international law that endangers millions of Pakistanis.
  • He warned that TTP, BLA, Al‑Qaeda and ISIL‑K operate from Afghan territory to stage cross‑border attacks, and told IPU President Tulia Ackson that treaty breaches are eroding respect for global law.
