Pakistan Moves to Speed Food Exports to Gulf

The government is framing the push as a supply-chain response that must not weaken food availability at home.

Overview

  • Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level review Wednesday where officials said a special committee had cleared a list of 40 export items that includes rice, cooking oil, sugar, meat, dairy, fruits and vegetables.
  • Sharif ordered faster shipments of surplus goods to Gulf markets with strict monitoring of local supply and warned that delays in government decisions would trigger accountability.
  • Officials reported a new exporters database, no extra charges on vegetable, fruit and meat shipments, active export facilitation desks, and the use of both air and sea routes supported by business-to-business outreach.
  • Maritime authorities said Karachi Port and Port Qasim stayed open through the Eid holidays and cut port transport rates by up to 60 percent to move cargo more quickly.
  • To add capacity, off-dock terminals can now handle transshipment after customs changes, and the prime minister directed more flights from Karachi, Gwadar and other airports to support food exports.
