Pakistan Marks Youm-e-Ali Under Tight, Coordinated Security

Authorities shortened schedules to conclude processions by Maghrib following the February 28 Karachi shooting.

Overview

  • Large processions and majalis were held across major cities, with routes sealed and multi-level screening as events in Karachi, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Islamabad followed traditional paths and concluded as planned.
  • Officials detailed extensive deployments including over 30,000 police across Punjab, about 22,304 across Sindh with 7,908 allotted to Karachi, roughly 5,200 officers on duty in Karachi on the day, around 3,500 in Islamabad, 1,932 in the Multan region and more than 1,900 in DG Khan.
  • Security plans featured layered cordons, Safe City and CCTV monitoring, walk-through gates and metal detectors, bomb disposal sweeps, rooftop snipers, rapid-response teams and streets blocked with containers at sensitive points.
  • Traffic authorities issued diversions and closures, notably Karachi’s Nishtar Park–to–Kharadar route with MA Jinnah Road shut from Guru Mandir to Tower and parts of Saddar closed, while Lahore set detours and designated parking for mourners.
  • Federal and provincial officials coordinated with Shia scholars to limit durations and end processions by sunset, as the inquiry into the February 28 Karachi attack that killed 11 people continues under heightened vigilance.
