Pakistan Lose Both Regular Openers Ahead of Australia ODIs

The injuries force selectors to rethink the top order, consider recalling senior players, test young prospects, review wicketkeeping options.

Overview

  • The Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed on Wednesday that openers Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub will not be available for selection for the three-match ODI series because they are undergoing rehabilitation under the PCB medical panel.
  • Media and selection sources report a likely recall for Babar Azam and say in-form T20I batter Sahibzada Farhan is a frontrunner to keep an opening spot, with younger players such as Sufiyan Muqeem and Hunain Shah also under consideration.
  • Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan is reported to be under active review by management as they weigh alternative wicketkeeping options for the white-ball side.
  • Preparations and logistics continue: players have been asked to report to Rawalpindi on May 22 for final camp work, Australia are due to arrive in Islamabad on May 23, and the ODIs will be played on May 30 (Rawalpindi) and June 2 and 4 (Lahore) with online ticket sales opening May 22.
  • The absences force a short-term reshuffle that also creates a chance to test bench strength and new combinations ahead of future white-ball commitments, and the injured players will follow PCB-supervised rehab programmes with fitness updates promised before the series.
