Overview
- The National Disaster Management Authority issued a nationwide advisory that covers June 7–12, which warned of intense heat in southern and central Pakistan and forecast rain and thunderstorms for parts of the north on June 11–12.
- Authorities say Sindh, southern Punjab and the plains of Balochistan will face the worst heat while Islamabad, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Punjab may see short-lived rain that will not end the heat across most of the country.
- The NDMA flagged accelerated glacier melt in Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir and named high-risk districts including Hunza, Ghizer, Diamer, Astor, Ghanche, Shigar, Chitral, Dir, Swat and Kohistan.
- Officials warned that glacial lake outburst floods, flash floods and landslides could close key routes such as sections of the Karakoram Highway and roads to Skardu, Shigar Valley and Deosai, and directed provincial agencies to step up monitoring and keep emergency resources on standby.
- A glacial lake outburst flood, or GLOF, happens when meltwater breaches an ice- or moraine-dammed lake and surges downstream, so rapid warming in the high mountains raises both immediate flood risk and the chance of sustained transport and water-supply disruption for affected communities.
