Pakistan Government Scraps April 5 Motorway Toll Hike

The rollback prioritizes short-term relief from rising fuel costs over new road revenue.

Overview

  • The federal government, which on Friday directed the National Highway Authority to retract its April 1 notice, cancelled the toll increases that were due to start April 5.
  • A fresh notification rescinded the 25% quarterly adjustment and froze any toll revisions for the rest of the current fiscal year.
  • Officials said recent spikes in petrol and diesel prices made it unfair to add costs for commuters and freight operators.
  • The withdrawn schedule had set car tolls such as Rs700 on M-1, Rs1,000 on M-3 and Rs1,500 on M-5, with some articulated-truck charges reported above Rs7,000.
  • In the same meeting, Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan called the planned eight-lane Karachi Port–Hyderabad M-10 an economic lifeline and urged work to proceed.
