Pakistan Finalizes 5G Spectrum Slots, Pilot Launches Set for Next Week

Pilot trials will start next week to translate the newly assigned spectrum into first 5G services.

Overview

  • Regulators completed the post-auction position assignment, bringing total proceeds from the two-stage process to $510 million after an additional $3 million was raised on Thursday.
  • In the 2600 MHz band, Jazz was placed at 2500–2570 MHz, Zong at 2570–2630 MHz and Ufone at 2630–2690 MHz, while the 3500 MHz positioning concluded after five rounds of bidding.
  • No positioning was required for 700 MHz because Jazz was the sole winner in that band during the auction.
  • The IT minister said pilot 5G projects will begin in selected major cities next week, with commercial services expected within six to eight months in the federal capital and provincial capitals.
  • PTML, a PTCL subsidiary, secured 180 MHz across 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz for $156.75 million and will proceed to sign its NGMS/5G licence with the PTA.
