Padres Bring Back Bud Black and Wil Myers in New Organizational Roles

The hires underscore a broader alumni-first approach within baseball operations.

Overview

  • San Diego confirmed on Jan. 14 that Bud Black will serve as senior adviser to baseball operations and Wil Myers will work as a special assignment coach in player development.
  • Black previously managed the Padres from 2007 to 2015, won the 2010 NL Manager of the Year, and was later dismissed by the Rockies in May 2025 after a 7–33 start.
  • Myers spent eight seasons with the Padres from 2015 to 2022, posting a .254/.330/.451 line with 134 home runs and 433 RBIs, and last played in 2023 for Cincinnati.
  • In December 2024, Myers said he would stop playing without formally retiring, and his new position marks an initial step into coaching.
  • The additions align with San Diego’s recent practice of bringing back notable alumni, such as Jake Peavy in 2025, and come with former reliever Craig Stammen now managing the club.
