Overnight Rain Band Brushes Northern California Before Rapid Warmup

The brief system exits Tuesday, with a quick warmup bringing 90s possible by the weekend.

Overview

  • Rain increased Monday evening as a narrow band swept across Northern California, with the most organized showers passing after midnight in an unusual northeast-to-southwest push for the Bay Area.
  • Heavier totals are favored north of San Francisco, where the North Bay could pick up about 0.25 to 0.50 inch, while San Francisco, the Peninsula and the East Bay urban core see around a tenth and the South Bay gets little or none.
  • KCRA forecasts show the Valley generally receiving 0.05 to 0.25 inch, the foothills 0.25 to 0.50 inch and the Sierra 0.50 to 1.00 inch as the overnight rain band concentrates the best totals.
  • In the Sacramento area, a focused stripe from the Sierra into Sacramento County could deliver roughly a quarter to a half inch before daybreak, with most Valley showers ending by sunrise Tuesday.
  • Higher terrain faces the most active weather, with a few thunderstorms and slushy snow possible above about 8,000 feet in the Sierra, then a fast transition to drier, warmer conditions by midweek.
