Over 40 Shops Destroyed in Bhubaneswar’s Unit-1 Market Fire

No injuries were reported, with firefighters using 13 tenders to fully douse the blaze in about three hours.

  • The fire broke out around 1:30 am on Tuesday at the Unit-1 market area, according to police.
  • About 80 firefighting personnel and more than a dozen tenders were deployed to control and extinguish the blaze.
  • Officials said dense plastic coverings, polythene stock and small LPG cylinders helped the flames spread quickly through closely packed stalls.
  • City leaders visited the site in the morning as teams began damage assessment and cleanup, and the market was shut for the day.
  • The municipal commissioner said government assistance will be provided to affected shopkeepers and noted that over Rs 20 crore has been sanctioned for new fire-safety upgrades.
