Over 20 Grey Seals Found Dead on Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern Coast

Forensic necropsies are under way after three examined animals produced one result in which an unnatural cause of death could not be ruled out.

An der Küste Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns sind in den vergangenen Wochen mehr als 20 tote Kegelrobben gefunden worden. Die Kadaver wurden seit Anfang Mai vor allem vor der Südostküste Rügens entdeckt. Die Todesursache ist noch unklar.

  • More than 20 grey seal carcasses have washed up since early May, concentrated mainly off the southeast coast of Rügen with isolated finds at Usedom and in the Greifswalder Bodden.
  • Several carcasses have been taken to the Deutsches Meeresmuseum Stralsund for necropsy and three animals have been examined so far.
  • Officials say one of the three necropsied seals showed findings that do not exclude an unnatural death, but overall causes remain unclear and work is ongoing.
  • The Landesumweltministerium reports no current evidence linking the deaths to local fisheries and the fisheries authority found no signs of gear being used in the affected zones during the period.
  • Environment Minister Till Backhaus said authorities are treating the cases seriously and that further forensic results and coordinated monitoring will determine next steps for local wildlife protection and fishing controls.
