Over 1,400 Speeding Drivers Caught in First 48 Hours of Easter Garda Operation

Officials say intensified checks over the holiday seek to prevent crashes.

  • Officers arrested 66 people on suspicion of drink or drug driving, and nearly 170 more were flagged for holding a phone or not wearing a seatbelt.
  • Notable cases included 141 km/h in a 100 zone near Killarney, 115 km/h in an 80 zone in Co Wexford, 81 km/h in a 60 zone on the N11, and 73 km/h in a 50 zone in Dublin 2.
  • Police are running Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoints and high-visibility patrols, with the operation scheduled to run until 7am Tuesday.
  • Gardaí and the Road Safety Authority urged extra care around people walking and cycling, and they reported no traffic fatalities so far.
