Ourea Events Ceases Trading, Halting 2026 Dragon’s Back, Cape Wrath and Other Races

The organiser blames pandemic debt, post-Brexit entry declines and rising costs for the halt.

Overview

  • The shutdown affects flagship ultrarunning events including the Dragon’s Back Race, Cape Wrath Ultra, Skyline Scotland, and the Northern Traverse with its Lakes, Dales and Moors Traverses.
  • The Northern Traverse series was sold out and due to start on 28 March, with Cape Wrath scheduled for May and Dragon’s Back for September, but these will not take place under Ourea.
  • Ourea says it is working with professional advisers on a reorganisation intended to allow the races to continue under different ownership or structure.
  • Entrants will be contacted in due course, and the company asked runners not to get in touch as it cannot respond, with local reporting noting some participants could be left out of pocket.
  • Shane Ohly said the business was profitable before COVID, then suffered an 18‑month suspension without grant support, a drop in international entries after Brexit, and cost increases of about 20%, leaving ongoing losses.
