Ouigo Fares Rose 73% Since 2017, Passenger Group Says, as SNCF Pushes Back

SNCF argues its pricing has trailed inflation, challenging the user group’s reading of the data.

Overview

  • The FNAUT analysis of ART data finds the average Ouigo ticket climbed from €19.80 in 2017 to €34.20 in 2023, a 73% jump.
  • Over the same span, the average TGV Inoui fare edged up 4%, from €44.70 to €46.60, highlighting divergent pricing across brands.
  • FNAUT reports Ouigo’s offer expanded about 185% as Inoui’s shrank 17.5%, with high-speed ridership rising from 110 million to 124 million, leaving many trains sold out.
  • SNCF counters that average TGV prices increased about 8% between 2019 and 2024 versus 16% consumer inflation, and says more than half of Ouigo tickets sell for under €30.
  • The operator also says Ouigo remains roughly 30% cheaper than a classic TGV ticket, even as travelers describe higher costs and some switching to buses during peak travel periods.
