OSIPTEL Begins Third Mass Blocking of 100,000 Unregistered Phones in Peru

Users have up to two business days after an SMS notice to complete free in-person IMEI registration.

Overview

  • Regulator OSIPTEL launched a new phase targeting about 100,000 devices not on Renteseg’s whitelist, bringing 2026’s total blockings to roughly 300,000 after rounds on January 26 and February 17.
  • The campaign focuses on phones flagged for use with adulterated or cloned IMEIs or linked to users with negative histories, as well as any device operating outside the whitelist.
  • Only devices registered in Renteseg’s whitelist can operate without restrictions, and operators must handle the mandatory registration for phones imported by individuals.
  • The required process is in person, free of charge, and capped at five devices per person per year, with staff verifying the physical and logical IMEI and collecting a sworn declaration of lawful personal import.
  • Consumers can check status via OSIPTEL’s “Checa si tu cel no está registrado” tool, require sellers in Peru to register unlisted devices, or seek an exceptional review at OSIPTEL offices with proof of purchase.
