Osaka Sewer Casing That Shot From Road Is Lowered to About 1.6 Meters as Final Removal Begins

Investigators are assessing whether recent dewatering made the empty retaining casing buoyant.

Overview

  • The steel cylinder rose roughly 10–13 meters early March 11 in Kita Ward near an elevated section of National Route 423.
  • The casing measures about 27–30 meters long and 3.5–4 meters in diameter and was installed to connect an existing sewer to a deeper storage conduit.
  • Firefighters drilled into the cylinder and injected water to force it back down, leaving only a short section exposed.
  • City officials say crews will cut and remove the remaining piece and that some nearby road restrictions will continue as work proceeds, with one route already reopened.
  • No injuries were reported, and Osaka’s construction bureau with police is investigating the cause, with buoyancy from dewatering under review.
