Orix Pitcher Hiroya Miyagi Undergoes Elbow Ligament Reconstruction in U.S.

The team expects a rehab of at least 12 months.

Overview

  • Miyagi, 24, had reconstruction of the inner ligament in his left elbow in the United States, the club said Wednesday, and he will miss the rest of the season.
  • He left a game on April 9 with elbow discomfort and was diagnosed with ligament damage the next day.
  • Before the injury, he made three starts after taking the Opening Day assignment, posting a 1–1 record with a 4.05 ERA and logging roughly 150 innings in each of the past five years.
  • Orix also reported that starter Shunpeita Yamashita underwent right elbow ligament reconstruction, which further thins the rotation.
  • Ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, often called Tommy John surgery, usually requires more than a year of rehab as pitchers rebuild arm strength through a gradual throwing program.
