Original ZSNES Creators Launch GPU-Powered Successor 'Super ZSNES'

The early release focuses on per-game visual upgrades through a new Super Enhancement Engine.

Overview

  • Super ZSNES, which launched Monday, is an early build for Windows, macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon), Linux and Android, with iOS listed as coming soon.
  • The rewrite moves much of the SNES graphics work to the GPU, enabling hi‑res Mode 7, 3D height maps, widescreen, overclocking and uncompressed audio.
  • The launch includes enhancements for seven games, covering F‑Zero, Gradius III, Mega Man X, Super Castlevania IV, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Super Mario World and Super Metroid.
  • The developers warn of emulation bugs and missing support for special chips like DSP‑1 and SuperFX, and they list optimization, chip emulation and netplay on the roadmap.
  • Enhancement packs stay separate from ROMs so users must provide their own game files, and the team plans built‑in tools for community-made upgrades alongside Patreon funding for ongoing work.
