Oribe Shampoo Recalled After Pluralibacter Bacteria Found in February Production

Kao’s voluntary recall follows lab tests that detected a preservative-resistant bacterium and raises questions about contamination control in personal-care manufacturing.

Overview

  • Kao USA announced a voluntary recall for Oribe Serene Scalp Densifying Shampoo after tests found Pluralibacter gergoviae in lots made February 21–26, 2026.
  • The recall covers two sizes with specific UPCs and lot codes: the 8.5 oz (UPC 840035231242, lot YR010556) and the 33.8 oz (UPC 840035231273, lots YR010566 and YR010576).
  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration posted the recall one day after Kao’s announcement and asked retailers and salons to remove the affected lots from sale.
  • Kao urges consumers to stop using the listed lots and contact its hotline at 800-333-2442 or email oribecomplaints@kao.com to arrange replacements; the company says risk is low for healthy people but higher for the immunocompromised.
  • Public-health and industry experts note Pluralibacter gergoviae can resist common cosmetic preservatives, a trait that has caused prior recalls and that highlights broader quality-control risks for personal-care makers.
