Orbán Won’t Take Seat in New Parliament

The decision signals a push to rebuild Fidesz after Péter Magyar’s landslide left his party with a two-thirds majority.

Overview

  • Viktor Orbán said in a Facebook video Saturday that he will give up the parliamentary seat he won and turn to reorganizing what he calls Hungary’s national camp.
  • He said Fidesz’s parliamentary group will be “radically transformed,” and the party presidium proposed Gergely Gulyás to lead the faction.
  • Orbán added he is ready to stay as Fidesz chairman if delegates re-elect him at a June congress following a nationwide party meeting next week.
  • The April 12 vote handed Péter Magyar’s Tisza 141 of 199 seats and cut Fidesz to 52, a supermajority that gives the new government room to quickly roll back many Orbán-era policies.
  • Hungary’s new parliament convenes May 9, with lawmakers sworn in and Magyar preparing rule-of-law and anti-corruption steps that aim to reset ties with the European Union.
