Orange Storm Alerts in Buenos Aires and Mendoza Put Harvest at Risk

A blocking pattern now threatens to prolong wet, unstable weather across Argentina’s grain belt.

Overview

  • Argentina’s national weather service and Mendoza’s Civil Defense posted orange alerts for sectors of Buenos Aires and Mendoza, warning of brief but intense downpours, frequent lightning, localized hail and wind gusts that could reach about 80–90 km/h.
  • The weather service said an atmospheric blocking pattern is lifting temperatures and humidity and will keep showers and gusty winds in place for several days.
  • Rains linked to a late‑March cyclogenesis event left very uneven totals across the farm core, with many stations near 70–130 mm and a local peak of 190 mm at Sauce Viejo, well above typical March averages near 110 mm.
  • Wet fields now threaten access and crop quality as soybean harvest is set to begin, and producers say they need roughly two rain‑free weeks to avoid delays and protect the grain.
  • Maize harvesting has resumed where conditions allow, with about 200,000 hectares cut in the last week, regional progress near 65% and average yields around 105 quintals per hectare.
