Orange Avalanche Alert Holds for Three Southern Alpine Departments Until Midday Wednesday

Heavy overnight snowfall has created unstable slabs, heightening the likelihood of large avalanches reaching high-altitude roads and refuges.

Overview

  • Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-Maritimes remain under orange avalanche vigilance until January 28 at noon, according to Météo-France.
  • About 40 cm fell overnight on the highest summits, with 60–80 cm expected in high mountain areas and locally up to 1 metre.
  • The avalanche risk is rated strong in the Mercantour, Haut-Var/Haut-Verdon and Champsaur massifs.
  • Météo-France warns of numerous large avalanches generally above roughly 1,800 m that could impact mountain infrastructure and may descend lower in usual couloirs.
  • Eleven other departments are on yellow avalanche vigilance, including Haute-Corse and Corse-du-Sud, with cautions for winter recreation and high-valley travel.
