Oral Antiviral Candidate Stops Measles-Like Virus Transmission in Ferret Study

Authors say the polymerase inhibitor could augment ring vaccination to reduce quarantine time as the candidate advances toward clinical testing.

  • GHP-88310 is a broad-spectrum orthoparamyxovirus polymerase inhibitor that acts by blocking the viral polymerase enzyme needed for viral replication.
  • In the experiments, twice-daily prophylaxis prevented transmission in air contacts, once-daily prophylaxis produced complete survival with seroconversion, and therapeutic dosing shortened contagiousness by about five days and prevented fatal outcomes in treated contacts.
  • The study was led by the Center for Translational Antiviral Research at Georgia State University, was funded by NIAID/NIH, and the investigators are preparing formal clinical trials while stressing that human safety and effectiveness have not yet been demonstrated.
  • The finding arrives against a backdrop of measles resurgence in North America since 2025 and, if replicated in humans, could help limit outbreaks, shorten quarantines, and reduce social and economic disruption.
