Optum Golf Channel Games to Return Dec. 16 With Scheffler and McIlroy as Captains

Versant’s recent spinoff plus major rights and content investments give Golf Channel room to build star-driven, short-form golf entertainment for primetime audiences.

Overview

  • Versant and Golf Channel confirmed the Optum Golf Channel Games will air live in primetime on Golf Channel and USA Sports on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2026.
  • Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are locked in as the event’s captains while the remaining six competitors and any formal format changes have not been announced.
  • The event is expected to keep its made-for-TV, rapid-fire skill challenges such as timed driving, a 14-club closest-to-the-pin, a four-player relay, and a captain’s head-to-head contest.
  • Last year’s inaugural Games at Trump National in Jupiter, Florida, ended with Team Scheffler winning a sudden-death closest-to-the-pin chip-off, a finish that framed the event as entertainment-first golf.
  • Versant’s January spinoff, McIlroy’s long-term deal, extended media rights and the Full Swing acquisition are the business moves enabling Golf Channel to experiment with spectacle-driven golf properties and wider distribution.
