Opposition Targets Lula Parade Funding as Chamber Pushes End of 6x1 Workweek

Both fights reflect election-year pressure over public spending and worker rights.

Overview

  • Opposition figures filed a popular action in federal court and the Novo party took a case to the TSE seeking to block Acadêmicos de Niterói’s Lula-themed parade, alleging misuse of public funds and early electoral propaganda.
  • The TCU’s technical staff recommended suspending a federal R$12 million Embratur–Liesa transfer that allocates R$1 million to each of Rio’s 12 Special Group schools, and former prosecutor Deltan Dallagnol asked state and municipal audit courts to halt local subsidies.
  • Liesa says federal support is distributed equally and that Embratur does not influence samba-enredo choices, noting additional sponsorships from the Rio state government (R$40 million) and city hall (R$25.8 million).
  • Chamber President Hugo Motta sent PECs ending the 6x1 schedule to the CCJ and signaled a special committee, as the Planalto keeps a plan to submit its own bill with urgency to seek a vote preferably in the first semester.
  • The Senate’s Organized Crime CPI canceled this week’s hearings with the governors of Pernambuco and Rio de Janeiro and set no new dates, adding to recent delays in the commission’s work.
