Openreach Ramps Up Full‑Fibre Rollout Across UK Towns as Adoption Lags

Customers must place an order with their chosen provider to upgrade to the new service.

Overview

  • Engineers have begun new builds in Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch, Stanley in County Durham, Haxby near York, and the Oxford areas of Cowley and Wheatley.
  • Recent completions are delivering high coverage, including around 90% in Whitburn and Walney Island, roughly 85% in Shaftesbury, and about 80% in Malvern, with thousands of premises now able to connect.
  • Ellesmere Port now has access for more than 18,000 homes and businesses following a £5.4m upgrade, yet many residents in multiple towns have not switched to Full Fibre.
  • Openreach says its network reaches more than 20 million properties and it aims to cover 25 million by the end of 2026, with potential to reach 30 million by 2030 subject to investment conditions.
  • The company plans to use existing ducts and poles where possible to limit disruption, may install new poles or underground ducts where needed, and frames the work under its Let’s Reach Zero sustainability strategy.
