Overview

  • Openreach expanded its collaboration with Google Cloud on Wednesday, using AI and geoanalytics to plan fibre builds and manage its 24,000-van fleet.
  • Fleet telematics have moved to Google Cloud, where data on routes, idling and faults is analyzed to cut unnecessary miles and fuel use.
  • Openreach says these changes are removing about 10,000 tonnes of CO2e a year while delivering millions of pounds in operational savings.
  • Engineers are using Vertex AI, BigQuery and Gemini Enterprise to build a digital twin of transport corridors and to halve time-to-insight for data work.
  • The company is investing £15bn to reach 25 million premises by end-2026 after passing 22 million so far, and it targets a zero-emission commercial fleet by 2031.
