OpenAI Weighs Legal Action Over Apple’s Limited ChatGPT Role in Siri

Apple’s plan to let users pick rival AI models could further shrink ChatGPT’s place in its assistant.

Overview

  • OpenAI is working with outside lawyers and may send Apple a breach-of-contract notice over how ChatGPT was built into Siri, according to multiple news reports.
  • OpenAI argues the Siri link is low visibility because users must say “ChatGPT,” responses show in a small pane with less detail, and Apple has not promoted the feature across devices.
  • The company expected the Apple tie-up to boost ChatGPT subscriptions and deepen use across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, but those gains did not appear and efforts to renegotiate stalled.
  • Apple is preparing iOS 27 to let people choose third-party AI models inside Siri, and it has been testing Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini for that option, Bloomberg reported.
  • Separately from the ChatGPT link, Apple and Google have announced a technical tie that will use Gemini to power an updated Siri later this year.
