OpenAI Trials ‘Sign in with ChatGPT’ Login for Third-Party Apps

Through a Codex CLI preview, OpenAI is surveying developers on using ChatGPT credentials to log into online shopping, social media or other services.

Overview

  • The feature under development would enable users to authenticate third-party applications with their ChatGPT account instead of separate logins.
  • A developer preview launched in early May via the open-source Codex CLI lets users link ChatGPT Free, Plus or Pro accounts to their API keys.
  • OpenAI is soliciting feedback from apps of all sizes—ranging from under 1,000 to over 100 million weekly users—and offering $5 in API credits for Plus sign-ins and $50 for Pro sign-ins.
  • The initiative is part of OpenAI’s push to expand ChatGPT beyond conversational AI into consumer services such as e-commerce and social media.
  • With about 600 million monthly active users, ChatGPT aims to compete with established identity platforms like Google Sign-In and Apple ID, though no public launch date has been set.
