OpenAI to Test Visual Ads in ChatGPT Image Generator

The change is meant to give advertisers image-based placements with third-party measurement integrations to help monetize free users.

Overview

  • OpenAI announced on Monday, Oct. 5 that it will begin U.S. testing later this month of a visual ad format that appears beneath the progress indicator during ChatGPT image generation for free-tier users.
  • The company says these ads will be clearly labeled, kept separate from user-generated images, and will not influence ChatGPT’s answers, and subscribers on Plus, Pro, and Enterprise plans will not see them.
  • OpenAI expanded integrations with attribution and measurement vendors such as AppsFlyer, Kochava, Triple Whale, Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp to let advertisers link ChatGPT ad exposure to conversions in their existing systems.
  • Brand-suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science will run in controlled tests without giving those firms access to private user conversations, and advertisers can set placement exclusions with features like Negative Phrases.
  • Industry sources warn that ChatGPT’s smaller prompt volume and single ad slot limit available inventory compared with search, which could cap how much advertisers can spend even if formats and measurement improve.
