OpenAI Launches Workspace Agents for ChatGPT

The rollout signals a shift from passive chatbots to autonomous AI coworkers built for repeatable, audited workflows.

Overview

  • Workspace Agents are now in research preview for Business, Enterprise, Education, and Teacher plans, free until May 6 with credit-based pricing to follow.
  • The agents run in the cloud and keep working in the background without a user online or inside the chat window.
  • Powered by the Codex engine, they plan and execute multi-step tasks for teams instead of waiting for one-off prompts.
  • They connect to tools like Slack, email, and spreadsheets to pull data and take actions such as sending messages or updating records.
  • Admins get role-based access controls, an “Always ask” default for sensitive actions, and a Compliance API, and OpenAI says this model will replace enterprise GPTs as rivals roll out similar agents.
