Overview
- An opt-in UK data residency option goes live on 24 October for OpenAI’s API Platform, ChatGPT Enterprise and ChatGPT Edu.
- The Ministry of Justice signed an MoU with OpenAI, providing 2,500 civil servants with ChatGPT Enterprise and making the department the first to use the UK data-hosting feature.
- Over 1,000 probation officers are receiving the in-house Justice Transcribe tool, with the MoJ estimating up to 240,000 staff days saved annually by reducing administrative work.
- The government frames the move as improving privacy, accountability and business confidence in the face of cyber threats and legal-access concerns such as the US Cloud Act.
- The push aligns with the Stargate UK plan with Nvidia and Nscale, targeting deployment of up to 8,000 GPUs early next year with potential to scale to 31,000, while public procurement records report a £6.75m MoJ–OpenAI award over two years from October 2025.
