Overview
- OpenAI announced on Monday that the company has established the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study, to advise on the significance and release of its mathematical results.
- The group is explicitly advisory only, its initial nine unpaid members may speak publicly, and the IAS said it has no decision-making power over OpenAI’s internal research pace.
- The move follows OpenAI’s September 8 claim that an internal multi-agent system produced a proposed solution to the Navier–Stokes Millennium Problem and that the same model resolved over 100 other open problems, claims that many mathematicians have questioned.
- Large-scale pushback has grown quickly: 771 mathematicians signed an open letter warning of rushed ‘‘slop mathematics,’’ 25 Fields Medalists issued a separate letter on attribution and education, and OpenAI withdrew a $1 million Caltech sponsorship days after its Navier–Stokes announcement.
- Independent verification, institutional reviews and disputes over attribution and possible use of private research data are ongoing, and new initiatives such as the Mathematical AI Safety Institute plan to hire mathematicians next year to provide an independent check on AI-driven work.
