OpenAI Closes $110 Billion Round From Amazon, Nvidia and SoftBank, Locking In Massive Compute Deals

The structure locks in access to Amazon Trainium chips plus Nvidia Rubin systems to secure scarce AI compute.

Overview

  • Amazon will invest $50 billion, starting with $15 billion followed by $35 billion upon conditions, alongside $30 billion each from Nvidia and SoftBank, OpenAI said Friday.
  • OpenAI will tap 2 gigawatts of capacity on Amazon’s Trainium chips and commit an additional $100 billion of AWS spending over eight years, expanding a prior cloud agreement.
  • The company will also use Nvidia’s latest Rubin systems representing roughly 5 gigawatts of compute, as Nvidia takes a $30 billion equity stake.
  • It remains unclear whether Nvidia’s new commitment replaces a previously reported plan of up to $100 billion, which had stalled in earlier negotiations, according to Reuters.
  • Microsoft’s role is unchanged, with Azure remaining the exclusive cloud for OpenAI’s APIs and Microsoft retaining exclusive licensing rights to OpenAI’s models and products.
