OpenAI, Anthropic and Block Launch Agentic AI Foundation Under Linux Foundation

The consortium seeks open, interoperable protocols for autonomous agents through a community-led standards process.

Overview

  • The Agentic AI Foundation was announced on December 10 under the Linux Foundation to define neutral standards for agent systems.
  • OpenAI contributes the widely used Agents.md format, Anthropic brings the Model Context Protocol, and Block provides the Goose agent framework.
  • OpenAI reports Agents.md has been used across more than 60,000 open-source projects, and Anthropic cites over 10,000 MCP servers since November 2024 with adoption in ChatGPT, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.
  • Early members already include Google, Microsoft, AWS, Cloudflare and Bloomberg, and the foundation is inviting developers, researchers and companies to participate.
  • Work is at an initial standards-setting stage, and a new commentary highlights security concerns around MCP while noting the move to neutral governance.
