Open-Source Tool Lets RTX Owners Run Custom VBIOS Without Flashing

It loads edited BIOS images at driver start to restore board-level power and voltage controls, a change that raises the risk of connector overload, warranty loss, rapid driver-based removal by NVIDIA.

Overview

  • GitHub developer Panchovix published a VBIOS editor plus Windows and Linux loaders that apply a modified VBIOS at driver initialization instead of flashing the card's onboard firmware.
  • On Monday the release showed the loader stores or injects the edited image into the driver path on Windows and patches NVIDIA kernel modules on Linux so the GPU boots from the custom image.
  • Developer and reporter tests documented large configured power-limit increases — examples include an RTX 5090 pushed to 700–800W, an RTX 5080 to about 500W, and an RTX 4090 to 671W as reported by nvidia-smi — and the tools can also lower voltages for undervolting.
  • Those changes do not change physical limits: pushing higher configured power can overload 12V connectors and VRMs, raise heat and stability issues, and will likely void vendor warranties or support for modded cards.
  • The tools revive firmware-level tuning long locked behind signed ROMs, but compatibility varies by model and the developer warns NVIDIA can patch drivers to block the override, so community testing, keeping original ROMs, and using the documented safe-mode recovery steps are advised.
