Opecst Deadlocks on Acetamiprid Risk Note, Halting Publication

The deadlock delays any conclusion on risks ahead of a May 19 farm bill.

Overview

  • The Parliament’s science office Opecst, which tied 6–6 Thursday, postponed release of its note on the insecticide acetamiprid.
  • RN deputy Emeric Salmon voted against the draft he co-authored with PS senator Michaël Weber, joining RN, LR and Horizons members to block it.
  • After the vote, Weber presented the draft’s findings to reporters, drawing a sharp public rebuke from Opecst president Stéphane Piednoir.
  • Piednoir called the text “a bit apocalyptic” and said it lacked clear measures, and members pushed for more expert hearings, including from EFSA.
  • The unreleased draft cites about 80 studies that flag endocrine, neurotoxic and reproductive risks and suggests tougher EU reviews and insurance for farmers without alternatives, while France bans acetamiprid but the EU allows it until 2033.
