Ookla Data Shows Samsung Dominates Foldables as Apple Prepares iPhone Duo

Apple’s iPhone Duo enters the foldable market with limited supply, high price and hardware trade-offs that make near-term disruption uncertain.

Overview

  • Ookla’s Speedtest analysis shows Samsung accounts for roughly three-quarters of measured foldable usage with about 76% share and the Galaxy Z Fold7 as the single largest model.
  • Device benchmarks in Ookla’s report found the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra led on raw download and upload speeds and packet-loss reduction while the Fold6 posted the strongest signal-quality scores.
  • Ookla recorded generational gains for Samsung on download/upload speed and signal strength but also noted regressions for the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra on overheating-related throttling and some weak signal results in poor conditions.
  • Foldable phones remain a small slice of global smartphone activity in Speedtest samples at about 1.4% which limits how much current usage data predicts broader market share shifts.
  • Reported plans for a roughly 10 million-unit iPhone Duo production run are unconfirmed by Apple and should be weighed alongside Ookla’s sample-based limits when assessing whether Apple will quickly eat into Samsung’s lead.
