Ontario to Give K–8 Teachers $750 a Year for Classroom Supplies Starting in September

The province casts the $66‑million plan as a fix for supplies that never reach classrooms after board allocations.

Overview

  • Beginning in September 2026, homeroom teachers from kindergarten to Grade 8 will have $750 each school year to order classroom supplies through a new provincial website.
  • The purchasing portal will be operated with Supply Ontario and will offer grade-by-grade options, with the government surveying teachers on what to stock.
  • Eligible items include writing tools, notebooks, calculators, chalk, arts-and-crafts materials, tissues and paper towels, with deliveries sent directly to schools.
  • The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario called the measure a pre-bargaining “gift” and said it does not address chronic underfunding, echoing public complaints that special-education supports need priority.
  • The announcement comes ahead of the March 26 provincial budget, and the education minister said the program could be expanded to secondary teachers after consultations.
