Onion Price Crash in Maharashtra Spurs Market Dumping and Calls to Oust Nandgaon APMC Board

A supply glut, storage losses, weak exports and recent weather damage fuel the collapse.

Overview

  • Wholesale onion prices in Maharashtra have sunk to Re 1–Rs 4 per kg for smaller lots and about Rs 800–1,000 per quintal for average quality, pushing sales below basic costs.
  • At Nandgaon APMC in Nashik, farmers dumped roughly 2,500 kg outside the office after their produce was not taken up for auction.
  • The Maharashtra State Onion Growers’ Association labeled the Nandgaon market committee defunct and sought dismissal of its board with a government administrator to restart regular auctions that APMCs are supposed to run.
  • The squeeze shows up in bills, including a Paithan farmer who sold at Re 1 per kg and, after market and transport fees, was told he owed Re 1.
  • Grower groups asked for a minimum price near Rs 2,000 per quintal or a per-quintal subsidy and for state-backed agencies to buy from mandis, and they have flagged a May 15 protest in Mumbai if relief does not arrive.
