One Skier Dead After Twin Avalanches at Casera Razzo and Sella Nevea

A Level 3 avalanche warning left unstable snow that complicated rescue operations.

Overview

  • Emergency calls around 14:30 local time triggered simultaneous deployments to the two sites in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Alps.
  • At Casera Razzo, rescuers recovered a person after hours of searching under roughly a meter of snow, who was pronounced dead.
  • At Sella Nevea, a group of five was caught; one person was dug out by companions and teams, conscious with trauma and hypothermia, then stabilized and flown to Udine hospital.
  • Authorities rated the day’s avalanche danger at Level 3 above 1,400 meters due to fresh snow and wind slabs, conditions under which even a single skier can trigger a release.
  • SORES led a multi-agency response with regional rescue helicopters, a Protezione Civile aircraft, mountain-rescue units, avalanche dogs, Vigili del Fuoco and Guardia di Finanza, with work hindered by weather, deep snow and poor communications.
