On 211 Day, Providers Spotlight 24/7 Helpline Linking Residents to Local Aid

New data underscore heavy use as centers recruit more partners for referrals.

Overview

  • Heart of Florida United Way handled more than 242,000 calls, texts and online messages in 2025 across Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties, with housing and shelter at 41%, utilities at 18% and mental health support at 6%.
  • The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay reported 111,809 calls in 2024, including 51,800 suicide or crisis contacts and 60,009 information and referral requests, connecting callers to over 3,000 community resources.
  • Local messaging stresses that 211 is for urgent everyday needs such as rent assistance, mental health questions, caregiving, transportation and food support, not only severe emergencies.
  • The service is free, confidential and available around the clock, with 911 reserved for emergencies and 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline; 311 covers municipal issues in some nearby jurisdictions like Sarasota and Manatee, while cities such as Tampa use apps or websites.
  • Tampa’s 211 team also coordinates with police and 911 dispatchers to receive transfers of mental health calls, and providers are asking more organizations to join their resource databases to speed referrals.
