Ole Miss’ Pete Golding Breaks Silence on Clemson Tampering Allegations

The case is an early test of tougher NCAA tampering enforcement.

Overview

  • Golding, who spoke Tuesday after spring practice, said there are two sides to the Luke Ferrelli recruitment and directed questions to Ole Miss compliance.
  • Clemson’s Dabo Swinney alleges Golding contacted Ferrelli while he was in class at Clemson after enrolling earlier in January and says the school sent call and text records and photos of a $1 million contract to the NCAA.
  • Golding says Ferrelli visited Oxford before the Fiesta Bowl and was targeted for the “green-dot” Mike role that carries helmet-to-sideline communication, which he says only became available after TJ Dottery transferred to LSU on Jan. 16.
  • Ferrelli committed to Clemson in early January and then flipped to Ole Miss on Jan. 22, a tight timeline that sits at the center of the dispute over when contact occurred.
  • The NCAA has an open review with no ruling yet, proposed penalties up for an April vote include a six-week coaching suspension, a fine equal to 20% of a football budget, and a reduction of five roster spots, and Ferrelli is already practicing with Ole Miss’ first team in the green-dot role.
