Ohio State Trustees Ratify $100 Million Settlement With 279 Strauss Plaintiffs

A court-appointed special master will interview claimants to decide individual awards.

Overview

  • The university’s Board of Trustees approved the settlement in principle on Wednesday covering 279 of 280 plaintiffs who sued over abuse by team doctor Richard Strauss.
  • A Perkins Coie report from 2019 found at least 177 men were abused by Strauss between the late 1970s and 1998 and that university staff knew of complaints but failed to stop him.
  • A court-appointed special master will conduct individual interviews in the coming weeks to assess harm and set each plaintiff’s share of the $100 million fund.
  • One plaintiff has not signed the agreement and separate legal fights continue, including a bellwether trial scheduled for October 2026 and disputes over which officials count as Title IX decision-makers.
  • Ohio State previously paid more than $61 million to other Strauss survivors and the new deal advances compensation while keeping open further depositions and scrutiny of administrators and prominent figures tied to the era.
