Official Forecasts Show Saxony's Population Falling Below Four Million

The projections signal the sharpest strain for rural services outside the big cities.

Overview

  • Saxony’s statistics office, using 2021–2024 trends, projects the state will slip under four million residents in the coming years.
  • The outlook puts the population at about 4.04 million in 2024 and between 3.71 million and 3.43 million by 2045, a drop of 8.2% to 15.2%.
  • All ten rural districts and the city of Chemnitz are set to lose residents in every scenario, according to the official models.
  • Leipzig may grow in two variants by 5.8% or 1.7%, and Dresden could edge up 1.6% in one case, highlighting a clear urban–rural split.
  • Vogtlandkreis and Erzgebirgskreis face the steepest slides of nearly one quarter in the worst case, and five more districts would still shrink by over 10% even in the mildest path.
